Where Psychology Meets Pet Care
Dr. Jessica Torres is the founder of Psypawlogy, where her lifelong passion for animals meets her professional expertise in psychology and human behavior.
She earned her Doctor of Psychology (Psy.D.) in Clinical Forensic Psychology and has dedicated her career to understanding behavior, building meaningful relationships, and providing compassionate, evidence-informed care. In addition to her clinical work, Dr. Torres serves as an Adjunct Faculty member at The Chicago School, where she teaches graduate-level psychology courses and mentors future mental health professionals.
As a devoted dog mom to her rescue pup, Brandy, Dr. Torres understands the trust it takes to leave a beloved companion in someone else’s care. That perspective inspired the creation of Psypawlogy and The Psypawlogy Method—the company’s signature behavior-informed philosophy of pet care.
Inspired by principles of psychology, The Psypawlogy Method emphasizes observation, relationship-building, consistency, communication, enrichment, and individualized care. While Psypawlogy does not provide veterinary medicine, dog training, or animal behavior therapy, the company believes every dog deserves to be understood as an individual with unique needs, routines, and ways of communicating.
Today, Psypawlogy provides personalized dog walking, Adventure Club, daycare, overnight care, puppy guidance and support, and community experiences throughout the DMV. Every service reflects Dr. Torres’s vision of helping dogs feel safe, confident, enriched, and genuinely cared for while giving pet parents complete peace of mind.

A Letter From Our Founder
Why I Created Psypawlogy™
The Beginning: Vaca
Vaca — The beginning of the Psypawlogy story.
Long before I understood psychology, before I studied behavior, and before I had the words
to explain concepts like attachment, trauma, resilience, and healing, there was Vaca.
Vaca was my first teacher in the power of the human-animal bond.
She was my childhood companion, my confidant, and my safe place.
She was there for moments no one else saw.
She shared my childhood tears, listened to my secrets, and stayed beside me through
experiences that shaped who I became.
During some of the most difficult moments of my childhood, Vaca was the one who knew.
She knew my fears.
She knew my sadness.
She knew the things I did not always know how to say out loud.
I talked to her about everything.
The moments that made me smile.
The moments that hurt.
The questions I did not know how to answer.
The feelings I did not know how to explain.
She never judged me.
She never asked me to be anything other than exactly who I was.
She simply stayed.
And in doing so, Vaca taught me one of the most important lessons of my life:
Sometimes healing begins with simply being seen, accepted, and loved exactly as we are.
Vaca was never “just a dog.”
She was family.
She was comfort.
She was my first experience with the extraordinary impact an animal can have on a person’s
emotional wellbeing.
Saying Goodbye to My First Teacher
After sixteen beautiful years together, I said goodbye to Vaca in December 2023.
It was one of the hardest moments of my life.
But it was also one of the greatest honors.
For sixteen years, Vaca had been beside me through every season of life. She witnessed my
growth, comforted me through difficult moments, and gave me a lifetime of unconditional
love.
When the time came, I knew I owed her the same love and devotion she had given me.
I held her.
I stayed with her.
I carried her through her final moments and was honored to be beside her as she took her
last breath.
It hurt because our bond was profound.
But being there for her was an act of love.
Vaca spent her life reminding me that I was never alone.
I spent her final moments reminding her that she never was either.
The Inspiration: Brandy
Brandy — The inspiration behind Psypawlogy’s approach to compassionate, behavior-informed
care.
Years later, another Chihuahua entered my life and helped transform a lifelong belief into a
mission.
Her name was Brandy.
Brandy reminded me that every animal carries a story.
She was not the stereotypical “perfect” dog.
She had her own personality, fears, quirks, challenges, and needs.
She required patience, understanding, advocacy, and someone willing to look beyond
behavior and ask:
“What is this animal trying to communicate?”
Through Brandy, I was reminded that animals are not problems to solve.
They are individuals to understand.
An anxious dog is not a difficult dog.
A fearful dog is not a broken dog.
A rescue animal is not defined by their past.
Every animal deserves compassion, patience, and the opportunity to feel safe.
Brandy became a reminder of countless animals and pet parents who need support,
education, and someone willing to understand their story.
The Science Behind the Bond
My journey into psychology allowed me to put science behind what Vaca had already taught
me and what Brandy continued to reinforce:
Relationships matter.
Connection matters.
Healing happens through safe and meaningful bonds.
Through my education, clinical training, research, and work as a psychologist and educator, I
continued exploring the questions these animals had unknowingly introduced me to:
Why do these relationships matter so deeply?
How do animals influence our emotional wellbeing?
How can we better support both animals and the people who love them?
Psychology gave language to something I had experienced my entire life:
The human-animal bond is powerful.
It shapes us.
It comforts us.
It connects us.
The Need for Something Different
For too long, we have separated the care of animals from the care of the humans who love
them.
But I believe those two things were never meant to exist separately.
Behind every animal is a person who loves them.
Behind every pet parent is a story.
Behind every behavior is communication.
Behind every relationship is an opportunity for understanding.
Psypawlogy™ was created to bridge that gap.
The Birth of Psypawlogy™
Psypawlogy was founded on one simple belief:
When we care for animals, we must also care for the people who love them.
The relationship between a person and their companion animal is one of the most
meaningful connections many of us will ever experience.
Yet historically, we have separated the care of animals from the care of the humans who
love them.
Psypawlogy exists to bring these worlds together.
We combine compassionate pet care, psychological science, education, research, and
community support to strengthen the human-animal bond.
Because the wellbeing of animals and the wellbeing of people are deeply connected.
When an animal feels safe, a person feels supported.
When a person feels supported, an animal’s life is enriched.
The bond goes both ways.
Our Promise
As Psypawlogy grows, our mission will remain unchanged.
We will always prioritize:
Compassion over convenience.
Integrity over profit.
Science over assumption.
Understanding over judgment.
We will advocate for animals who cannot speak for themselves.
We will support people who are doing their best to care for those animals.
We will continue learning, growing, and evolving because those entrusted to us deserve
nothing less.
Every animal deserves to be respected.
Every person deserves to feel supported.
Every relationship deserves to be honored.
To Our Community
To every pet parent who trusts Psypawlogy:
Thank you.
Thank you for allowing us into one of the most meaningful relationships in your life.
To every animal we have the privilege of caring for:
We see you.
We respect you.
We will continue learning how to better understand you.
To every clinician, educator, student, team member, partner, and community member who
joins this mission:
Thank you for believing in a future where compassion and science work together.
Looking Forward
I hope Psypawlogy becomes more than an organization.
I hope it becomes a reminder.
A reminder that animals are not simply part of our lives.
They are part of our stories.
They witness our growth.
They comfort us through our pain.
They teach us unconditional love.
And they deserve the very best we can give them.
Vaca was the beginning.
Brandy was the inspiration.
Psypawlogy is the promise.
A promise to protect, strengthen, and honor the bond between people and animals for
generations to come.
With gratitude,
Jessica Torres, Psy.D.
